“Art can educate. Art is the vehicle by which our imaginations can flourish and inspire. It is essential”. Robert Redford, Scholastic Alum ’54, Actor, Director, Producer
The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program has become an essential part of the Fort Wayne Museum of Art’s K-12 Education program. It has grown into what is now a model program for the rest of the country, garnering a visit recently by Scholastic Alliance Executive Director Virginia McEnerney to witness for herself the keys to the program’s success.
The Scholastic program reaches into 52 counties in Indiana and Ohio and had over 2,300 entries last year. From those entries, 480 works of art and 122 pieces of writing were displayed. In 2009 the program tied for seventh place in National competition. Excitement and enthusiasm for the program continues to entice more teachers to become involved and the number of entries for the 2010 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards should reach a record number.
The Fort Wayne Museum of Art, while still not entirely open to the public, will exhibit Scholastic in the new Lincoln Auditorium and Contemporary Regional Gallery, allowing visitors a sneak peek at the renovation and expansion project that has had the Museum closed for the past six months.
The Awards Ceremony will be held Saturday, February 13 at 1:00pm at the Grand Wayne Center in downtown Fort Wayne.
